Many people say that just seeing green can help encourage a relaxed and calming mood. This was also experienced by hospital patients who saw plants around the care room, which were found to have lower blood pressure, pain, anxiety and fatigue levels.
"In addition to indulging the senses of sight, fragrances from plants can also have an impact on moods. The scent of flowers such as lavender and jasmine is believed to provide calm," Lea added.
He added, doing gardening activities even on a small scale indoors can also provide benefits similar to horticulture therapy, namely when gardening is used as a form of therapy. Active interactions with indoor plants such as watering potted flowers every day, can help adults recover from work-related stress.
The presence of plants is also believed to be able to improve indoor air quality. A famous NASA experiment from 1989 found that plants can help eliminate volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde and benzene from the air.
"Boston Fern is one of the most effective plants to remove pollutants in the air, but it is often difficult to grow indoors. I usually recommend golden pothos as the first choice because it is quite popular and easy to grow," said Bill Wolverton, a former NASA research scientist.
Now if you are interested in putting plants in the house, then you have to choose the right type. Because some plants release carbon dioxide at night. Some good plant choices are orchids, succulents, snake plants, and bromeliads, all of which release oxygen.
